âI KNOW IâM A SUSPICIOUS bastard,â Jack said as he squinted into the sunlight, watching the forklift carefully maneuver the sedated Hawn into the back of the semi parked on the grass. âBut this feels off to me. Like, a lot.â
Yousef lifted a thick eyebrow as he helped Calloway haul the large reptile onto the bed of the truck. âIs he always like this?â
âAlways,â Calloway and Kamala both confirmed.
âLies,â Jack sniffed. âIâm a picture of sanity and trust, usually.â
âWell,â Calloway said as he looped a tether around the desert dragonâs neck and then padlocked it to one of the metal hooks sticking out from the wall. âTo be fair, the way you described those two hillbillies, it did sound like your mother put the fear of God in them.â
âDespite their names, theyâre godless heathens. Hence why I have this nagging feeling right about now. I donât like this, man.â
Calloway dusted off his hands and hopped down from the truck, pouting slightly. âAnd here I thought youâd be happy to see me, Jackie Boy.â
âItâs been killing me,â Jack deadpanned. âI lay awake nights thinking about how much I miss you, Brucie.â
He laughed and shook his head. âSarcastic bastard. Look, youâve got nothing to worry about. Yousefâs authorized to drive anything with a steering wheel and Iâll be the lookout, and weâre mostly taking backroads to the airport to fly ole girl to Arizona. Sheâs out, so she wonât make a fuss. I even have a checkpoint during the ride to make sure sheâs still sedated. Itâs just an hour. Honestly, this is a walk in the park compared to some of our retrievals, as Iâm sure Kam has told you by now.â
âHeâs not wrong,â Richard said once heâd parked the forklift a few feet away and shut it off. âThose Bailey boys arenât usually the type to take no for an answer. You ought to watch your six.â
Calloway shook his hand. âThanks for the assist, Mr. Jackson, and trust me, weâll watch our backs out here in these sticks. You got me missing smog and traffic. Whatâs all this clean air? Whereâs I-285 and the Varsity?â
Richard chuckled. âYouâll be back soon enough, city boy.â
Calloway eyed Jack and stroked his goatee for a second. âYou know, if youâre that worried about our girl, you could tag along.â
âOh, no you donât.â Jack held up both hands. âYouâre not roping me into this again. Remember the part where I got shot the last time I helped retrieve a dragon? In the chest, I might add?â
âYou were wearing body armor,â Calloway said, shrugging. âBig deal.â
âHave you ever been shot before?â
Calloway narrowed his eyes and replied in equal deadpan. âItâs because Iâm black, isnât it?â
Jack tried his best to stifle a laugh, but it still leaked out anyway. âNot my point. The idea was to draw the madness away from our kid, remember?â
His girlfriend gestured to the dragon inside of the eighteen-wheeler. âAnd we see how well that worked.â
Jack scowled. âHey. I tried, dammit. This was all Dadâs fault.
